A Step to Better Health - The Benefits of Spa Treatment

I remember logging in to Instagram one fine Saturday morning and seeing one of the social media influencers that I follow telling her audience about how she went for a spa treatment after being stressed for a long time. She mentioned that she did facials and had a general body massage. She went ahead to list the benefits of spa treatments and encouraged her followers to go for massage treatment once in a while. It is in this light that I would like to expatiate on how spa can improve our chances of getting better health for ourselves. For the purpose of this article, let us look at spa treatment as one of the steps to assuaging stress.

According to an article on medlineplus.com, “stress is a feeling of emotional or physical tension”. Stress inhibits the human ability to function properly. The person who is undergoing stress will not be able to perform his daily tasks and this may lead to a break down in the person’s health if something is not done about it.

Let’s imagine that Dami is facing serious stress from work and her six-month-old twin babies are not making it easier for her. We might want to recommend a spa treatment for her, most especially the full body massage. What the full body massage does is that it helps to relieve you of stiffness in every area of your body. The masseur makes sure to massage your neck, your collar bones, shoulder blades, your back, your arms and lower back, the thighs, legs and every other part of the body that might be stiff.

Generally, because you are not allowed to go into the spa with your phone or any electronic device, your mind is at peace and it is not wandering around thinking of who is sending a message or who is calling. Before undergoing a spa treatment, clients are always advised to try and relax. They are advised to make sure that they concentrate only on the reason they are there, which is to get rid of stress and have improved health.

One of the treatments that can improve the health of a person through the spa is aromatherapy. Aromatherapy simply means the use of certain essential oils that are made from herbal plants to massage a person in order to help them relax and promote their general wellbeing. These oils have a range of varieties which a person can decide to choose from. Because there would be no massage without the use of certain products, it is advised that clients who would like to undergo spa for the sole purpose of getting better health, request for aromatherapy instead of getting just facials—facials is a type of spa treatment that focuses only on the face.

There are lots of health benefits attached to getting a spa treatment. The first one is the fact that it rejuvenates the skin. Due to the use of certain essential oils while massaging, the pores of the skin assimilate those oils, therefore enhancing rejuvenation. Warm water baths during spa sessions also open the skin pores so that the skin can breathe, and dead cells can peel off.

Another benefit is an improvement in the free circulation of blood. When you get a full body massage, your muscles relax, and veins tend not to be clogged thereby resulting in the free flow of blood around the body.

Getting spa treatments can also enhance good and restful sleep. Most times, when people complain of the inability to get a good night’s rest, it is usually due to anxiety, too much thinking or stress and since spa treatments are known to help relieve people of stress, it should be recommended to people who find it difficult to sleep.

Currently in Nigeria, only a few people and mostly the people in the middle class and the elites can afford to go for spa sessions but then, spa sessions are necessary and essential for everyone. There are cheap plans and pocket-friendly spa centres across the country, therefore Nigerians should cultivate the habit of visiting the spa once in a while. I believe that with time, people will go to spa centres the same way they visit shopping malls.
