Easy Breakup

Image
I wake up with a banging head. It’s the third day in a row, I have used Paracetamol and Dolo Meta-B repeatedly because I thought it had something to do with my eyes. I just got new glasses last week, it definitely isn’t because of the glasses or is it?   I get up from the bed and find my way to the kitchen. The sachet of Paracetamol lay there on the counter just beside the sink. I’m thinking, “should I take another dose or just go back to sleep?” I decide to go back to sleep. Perhaps if I try to sleep for a longer time, I’ll feel better when I wake up—I go back to bed.   I wake up at exactly 2p.m. Have I been sleeping all this time? Shit! I’ve missed my Saturday class for Yoga. I pick up my phone with the intention of apologising to my instructor on WhatsApp. I see the notifications—63 messages from 8 chats. I groan…. Arrrggghhh! Who are the people sending these messages? Can’t a girl be offline for a bit?   I ignore the messages and just send my apology to Chiks,...

Skeleton No Bottom

“ You should eat more food and eat it often too, like six times in a day”, mum says to Tiwa my best friend. She is skinny and eats very little. She is the first person I have met who dislike food. I don’t know her favourite food because she never eats anything with delight. She eats sparingly. I am the exact opposite of Tiwa, I LOVE food! My mum is a great cook you see, and she makes all sorts of whatnots from the recipes she reads about in cookery books or those she gets from the internet. Everyone in my house has a healthy appetite and no one is skinny except my brother; my brother eats a lot but it does not reflect on his body which makes us tease him all the time. Tiwa is looking down at her toes, trying to hide the crooked smile on her lips. My friend always has that crooked smile on her face whenever my mum makes any of those remarks regarding her weight. I am not bothered about mum’s remark to my friend, I am busy behind the kitchen counter with a plate of five cookies resting...

The Business of Social Media Influencing in Africa

Image
Social media influencing is fast becoming a major aspect of marketing in Africa. This is because the billboard, television and radio advertisements are no longer getting the job done the way they used to back in the days. With regards to this article, I would like to use Nigeria which is the largest country in West Africa (with regards to population) as my case study. If we are to discuss the business of social media influencing in Africa, we would have to talk about everything that is involved in social media influencing such as: ·          What is social media influencing? ·          Who is a social media influencer? ·          What are the benefits of using social media influencers in advertising? ·          What are the different types of social media influencers that exist? ·      ...

A Step to Better Health - The Benefits of Spa Treatment

Image
I remember logging in to Instagram one fine Saturday morning and seeing one of the social media influencers that I follow telling her audience about how she went for a spa treatment after being stressed for a long time. She mentioned that she did facials and had a general body massage. She went ahead to list the benefits of spa treatments and encouraged her followers to go for massage treatment once in a while. It is in this light that I would like to expatiate on how spa can improve our chances of getting better health for ourselves. For the purpose of this article, let us look at spa treatment as one of the steps to assuaging stress. According to an article on medlineplus.com, “stress is a feeling of emotional or physical tension”. Stress inhibits the human ability to function properly. The person who is undergoing stress will not be able to perform his daily tasks and this may lead to a break down in the person’s health if something is not done about it. Let’s imagine th...

Sheila's Musings

Image
The last time Sheila ever felt loved—intense, soul-wrenching, heart-thumping love was in the period between 2007 – 2011. She was just 19 and he was 21. He didn’t have money to give her and she didn’t even want money, she wanted just him—and he did love her. It was obvious in the way he treated her. In the way he looked at her. She knew it deep down in her soul that he loved her until he didn’t because he cheated and made it so obvious—she almost died. It was excruciatingly painful… But two years later, she moved on. In her service year, in 2013, she met someone else. He was so caring. Very loving. Everything she could ever want in a man. It was all so beautiful, but he was so insecure. He would check her phones and read her chats, but she didn’t mind because she had nothing to hide. Until she found out she was the side chick and took her L with pride and moved on. Fast forward to Dami in 2015. She needs to tell you his name because he was the only one who ever did right by h...

Books for You This Lockdown Period

Image
Following the announcement by President Buhari last night, a lot of us will be indoors for the next fourteen days. This can turn out to be a very boring time seeing as we can't visit anyone and we are not allowed to leave our houses. I have curated a list of amazingly interesting books that can keep you busy during this period and for those who find it difficult to read, I have added some audiobooks as well. Now, you can listen to your favourite stories while doing other things. See the list below: The Girl with the Louding Voice - Abi Dare A powerful, emotional debut novel told in the unforgettable voice of a young Nigerian woman who is trapped in a life of servitude but determined to fight for her dreams and choose her own future. Adunni is a fourteen-year-old Nigerian girl who knows what she wants: an education. This, her mother has told her, is the only way to get a “louding voice”—the ability to speak for herself and decide her own future. But i...
